Silverstone hosted the opening rounds of the BRSCC Formula Jedi Championship for 2015.
Positive pace on Friday after some teething problems with the new engine during pre-season testing.
Encouraging start to the weekend, Saturday morning proved anything can go wrong. Warming the car up for qualifying it developed a misfire. With the engine in bits the other drivers had already begun the session. The team were all hands on to get new parts fitted to the car and with fingers crossed they fired up the engine. Lee headed out of the pits with half of the 20 minute session already gone. Pushing straight from the off and when the chequered flag dropped took pole by 0.05 of a second.
Race 1 –Lights out and Lee dropped to 2nd after ballistic starting Dan Clowes in car 8. Disaster as Lee braked for Maggots Curve, the car squirmed under braking. He tried to get the car under control but got hit from behind putting him into a spin. With the safety car out the marshals recovered him, but 2 laps down and at the back of the pack. Safety car came in and Lee took the fight to the pack to work his way back onto the lead lap. By the end he had un-lapped himself up to 5th place, setting his fastest time on the final lap of the race (55.1s).
An early start Sunday with qualifying at 9am, perfect conditions for setting fast times. The first run set a time quick enough for pole by one tenth of a second. After a wing change, heading back out to improve and securing 2 poles out of 2 with a time of 54.7. An unofficial lap record. (Lap records are only official if set in a race)
Race 2 – Another good start, but not good enough as rocket Dan was first into copse. No dramas this time into Maggots, then heading down club straight into the slipstream trying a move around the outside of Dan into Brooklands. Lee couldn’t get the job done. The next opportunity would be the start/finish straight and a pass into copse. Holding the lead as a train of 7 cars came onto the club straight. Hard on the brakes into Brooklands as Dan tried a move for the lead just as Andy Dunn, car 9 who was in a double slipstream made a dive up the inside of both of them from 3rd. 3 into 1 never works as Lee held the lead around the outside, even after a slight touch resulting in Dans end plate being ripped from his front wing. As the pack battled Lee made a break and pulled a lead of just over 1second. On lap 7 with oil on the racing line of Maggots from a blown engine making for tricky conditions over the remaining laps. Lee managed to control the gap at the front and crossed the line taking the chequered flag and the win by just 1.2s. Incredible start to 2015.
The next championship round is at Rockingham on the 16th and 17th of May.
